The airbag clock spring (also called spiral cable) is an electrical connector inside the steering column that maintains continuous contact between the steering wheel and the vehicle wiring as the wheel rotates. When it fails, the airbag warning light illuminates, horn stops working, and steering wheel controls go dead.
How the Clock Spring Works
Inside the plastic housing sits a flat ribbon cable wound in a spiral. As you turn the steering wheel, the ribbon cable coils and uncoils while maintaining electrical contact for the airbag module, horn circuit, and steering wheel buttons. The ribbon is designed for approximately 10,000 steering cycles, typically lasting 80,000-150,000 km.
Common Failure Symptoms
The most reliable diagnostic sign is multiple steering-wheel-related failures occurring simultaneously. If the SRS airbag warning light turns on AND the horn stops working, the clock spring is the cause in 85% of cases. Other symptoms include intermittent function — horn works sometimes but not always during turns, cruise control cuts out, or audio buttons respond inconsistently.
Testing with a Multimeter
Remove the steering wheel (disconnect battery first, wait 15 minutes for airbag capacitor discharge). Set your multimeter to continuity mode. Test each circuit through the connector while slowly rotating the hub. If continuity drops at certain angles, the ribbon has a partial break. Complete open circuit confirms failure.
