Control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle frame, allowing suspension travel while keeping wheels aligned. When bushings wear out, the result is poor alignment, uneven tire wear, and compromised handling.
Failure Signs
Clunking over bumps is the most common symptom — worn bushings allow metal-on-metal contact. Steering vibration at highway speeds, especially during braking, indicates a bent arm or severely worn bushing. Uneven inner/outer tire edge wear means alignment is affected.
Complete Arm vs Bushing-Only
Modern vehicles increasingly use complete assemblies with pre-pressed bushings and integrated ball joints. European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) typically require complete arm replacement. Japanese vehicles (Toyota, Honda) often allow individual bushing replacement. For distributors, stocking complete arms is more practical — higher margins and no press equipment needed.
