Shock absorbers control suspension movement by converting kinetic energy into heat. Without functional shocks, brake distances increase 20-30% and tire wear accelerates dramatically.
Twin-Tube Design
Most common, used as OE on 70% of passenger vehicles. Inner working cylinder surrounded by outer reservoir tube. Cost-effective with comfortable ride. Limitation: can fade under sustained heavy use.
Mono-Tube Design
Single cylinder with floating gas separator. High-pressure nitrogen (25-30 bar) prevents cavitation. Better heat dissipation, more consistent performance. Standard on BMW, Audi, Mercedes and performance vehicles. 30-50% cost premium over twin-tube.
Gas vs Oil
Gas-charged shocks use pressurized nitrogen to prevent oil aeration, eliminating the dead zone where oil-only shocks feel soft. Pure oil shocks still used in budget applications but foam under sustained use.
When to Replace
Replace at 100,000-120,000 km. By then, damping is typically 30-40% below new. Visual signs: oil leaking from seal, dents, broken dust boot. Bounce test: car should return to rest in one bounce.
